Biography:

ELLIS, Jonathan (1762-1827?: Hollis)

The sixth son of the Rev. John Ellis of Franklin CT, he graduated from Yale in 1786, studied theology, and was licensed to preach in 1787. In 1789 he accepted a call to the Congregational Church in Topsham ME, where he was ordained and served as minister for ten years. The appointment was controversial, however, and a part of the congregation left to form a Baptist Society. In 1790, Ellis married Mary Fulton, with whom he had ten children. Dismissed from his post in 1799, he remained in Topsham, where he held various public positions, chiefly at Bowdoin College--though he was unsuccessful in a bid for an academic appointment. In 1811 he left his family behind in Topsham and went to teach in Pennsylvania and Delaware. His last letter to them was dated 1827. (Dexter; ancestry.com 7 Nov. 2018) HJ
