Biography:

ELLIOTT, Edward Bishop (1793-1875: ODNB)

Born on 24 July 1793 in Paddington, Middlesex, he was the second son of Charles Elliott (1751-1832) and his second wife Eling (or Elinor) Venn (1758-1843). His grandfather was the Rev. Henry Venn (ODNB). Elliott was baptised at St. James’s, Westminster, on 27 Aug. He was educated privately and on 17 May 1811 he was admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge. He matriculated in 1812 (Scholar 1814, BA 1816, MA 1819, Fellow 1817-24). He won the Seatonian prize in 1812 and 1822; his prize poems are the works listed in this bibliography. He travelled in Italy and Greece with his elder brother Henry in 1817-20 and on his return to England he was ordained deacon (1821) and priest (1822). He held some curacies before being appointed vicar of Tuxford, Nottinghamshire, in 1826. He was also prebendary of Heytesbury collegiate church in Wiltshire from 1826. On 26 Apr. 1826 he married Mary King of Loxwood, Sussex; they had two sons and two daughters before Mary’s death in June 1832. On 1 Oct. 1835 in Cheltenham he married Harriette Emily Steele, a daughter of Sir Richard Steele of co. Dublin, Ireland; they had one son and two daughters. In 1840 the family moved to Torquay where he worked on his 3-volume Horae Apocalypticae (1844, with later enlarged editions), a commentary on Revelation and the prophecies of Daniel. Although well-received the book generated some controversy to which he replied with Vindiciae Horariae (1848) and Apocalypsis Alfordiana (1862). Elliott also edited Memoir of Lord Haddo (1867). He was made vicar of St. Mark’s church in Brighton, Sussex, in 1853 and a prebendary of Salisbury in the same year. He died at home in Lewes Crescent, Brighton, on 30 July 1875 after a fall and was buried in the churchyard of St. Andrew’s, Hove. His will was proved on 4 Sept. and his estate valued at under £40,000. (ODNB 6 May 2024; ACAD; CCEd 6 May 2024; ancestry.co.uk 6 May 2024) SR
