Biography:
Elliot, Samuel (1777-1845: Hollis)
Second son of James and Martha (Day) Elliot, brother of James Elliot (q.v.). He too was born in Massachusetts, worked as a clerk in a general store in Guilford VT, and moved to Brattleboro VT where he was called to the bar in 1804 and set up a joint practice with his brother. (His one book of poetry was published before he left Massachusetts in 1803. A committed republican, he sent a copy to Thomas Jefferson.) As a respected lawyer, he held many public positions, such as State Attorney and Judge of Probate (1829-30), and was elected to the State legislature 1813-15, 1822-3, 1828-9. He married three times and had twelve children, nine of whom survived him.
