Author: Ellenwood, Henry S.

Biography:

Ellenwood, Henry S. (1790-1833: Buckingham)

He was born Henry Small in Newburyport MA but changed his name by law to Henry S. Ellenwood about 1815. His father Elisha Small, a ship's captain, died in the West Indies in 1806 and his widow took her two sons to Boston, where Henry was apprenticed to a prominent printer, J. T. Buckingham. He was a keen reader, and self-educated. Even as an apprentice, he was given to rhyming and would contribute poems and epigrams to local newspapers--a practice he continued throughout his life. He seems to have found it difficult to settle in any line of work, and moved about the states (MA, NY, NC) working as a printer, teaching school, or running newspapers, never for very long in one place. Some works published under the pseudonym of Peter Pindar or Peter Pindar, Jr. are attributed to him. He died of a "paralytic attack" in Wilmington NC. ([J. T. Buckingham] "Henry S. Ellenwood" New England Magazine 4 [1833] 433-45) HJ
