Author: Egerton, Charles
Biography:
EGERTON, Charles (fl 1780)
His A New History of England, In Verse, intended to educate young readers about the history of Britain, includes an introduction “concerning the nature and study of history.” However, the book gives no clues to the identity of the author. The name is not especially common and it is just possible that the author was Charles Egerton, who matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, on 23 May 1776, aged eighteen, and was the son of Charles Egerton of Dublin. If so, he became a clergyman after earning his BA (1784) and MA (1785). But no evidence linking that Charles Egerton to A New History of England has been located.
