Author: Edwards, Anna Maria

Biography:

EDWARDS, Anna Maria (fl 1787)

O’Donoghue speculates that she may have been of Welsh origin due to the number of Welsh subscribers to her book but she was born in Ireland near the River Liffey. She wrote the libretto for The Enchantress, performed at Dublin’s Opera House in Capel Street. No other information has been located. Her Poems states that one of the poems was previously published in a novel. A Guide to Irish Fiction, 1650-1900 suggests this may be Otho and Rutha  by Miss Edwards (q.v.) and that Miss Edwards was Anna Maria. However there is no grounds for this speculation: the poem is not in Otho which is entirely in prose, and Anna Maria Edwards clearly lived in Ireland while Miss Edwards lived in Scotland.  (RPW; O’Donoghue) SR
