His father was a barrister of Lincoln’s Inn, London, who had married Emma Bootle in St. George’s, Bloomsbury, on 1 June 1794; he was MP for Stirlingshire 1807-21 and inherited the baronetcy in 1807. In 1818 he travelled to Egypt and published A Journey to Two of the Oases of Upper Egypt in 1822. He inherited the baronetcy on his father’s death in Apr. 1821, becoming the third baronet. He unsuccessfully contested his father’s Stirlingshire seat in May of the same year. On 10 Oct. 1832 he married his cousin, Emma Wilbraham, in Astbury, Cheshire. They had three daughters who died in early infancy. His other publications include The Christian Gentleman’s Daily Walk (1840), Portions of the Psalms, Selected and Arranged (1852), and Short Readings in the Collects (1861). Leonora, listed in this bibliography, was reissued with another of his tragedies, Gaston de Foix, in 1837. He died at 34 Wilton Place, Belgrave Square, London, on 13 Mar. 1871. His half-brother, William, succeeded to the baronetcy. Emma Edmonstone continued living in London until her death in 1891.
