Author: Earle, Miss
Biography:
EARLE, Miss (fl 1821)
The subscription list to Corinth indicates that she was very well-connected; the list includes other authors (William Jerdan, Joanna Baillie, qq.v.) and philanthropic women (Mrs. Fergusson of Hermand, Mrs. Graham of Gartur, Mrs. Erskine of Linlathen, Vicountess Kilkoursie). It also includes B. Earle, Esq.; Miss Earle; and Miss F. Earle. These are tantalizing clues to her identity but so far they remain just clues. No certain information has been located. The Preface states that the book was published not for literary fame but to promote the comfort of those dear to the author. The book is sometimes erroneously attributed to Charlotte de Humboldt whose Corinth, a Tragedy, and Other Poems was published by subscription in 1838. SR
