Author: Eagles, Thomas

Biography:

EAGLES, Thomas (fl 1835-47)

Although he wrote three plays and published five books it has not been possible to identify Thomas Eagles with any certainty. He likely lived in Liverpool where some of his books were printed but they were published by Whittaker and Co. of Ave Maria Lane, London, and Eagles also had an association with Chester, Cheshire. Although Mountain Melodies is his first known publication, it includes poems said to have been taken from three tragedies: The Spaniard, Montanio and Addalena, and The Astrologer. These plays have not been traced and no mention of them has been found in contemporary newspapers. His other books are Relvedder, Baron Kolff (1837); Brendallah, a Poem (1838, printed in Chester); Llouvorko, a Tale; and Songs of the Valley (1840, printed in Chester); and Death’s Soliloquy (1847, printed in Liverpool). Mountain Melodies is dedicated to Sir John Tobin (1763-1851) who was mayor of Liverpool in 1819-20. SR
