Biography:

DUKE, William (1757-1840: Hollis)

He was born in Patapsco Neck MD. At the age of sixteen he was licensed as an "exhorter" and preached widely in Maryland and neighbouring states. In 1780 he had the opportunity to study Latin and Greek privately. He was ordained in the Episcopalian Church in 1785 and called to a small Maryland parish, but he then moved from parish to parish for some years, supplementing his income from pastoral work with schoolteaching. In 1818 he returned to Elkton MD as Principal of the Academy, and stayed there for the rest of his life, writing on church issues and contributing to theological publications. He married Hetty Couden in 1793; they had one daughter. (Appleton; Sprague; The Poets and Poetry of Cecil County, Maryland, ed. George Johnston [1887]) HJ
