Biography:
DUKE, Seymour R. (fl 1830?)
The pseudonym "a Southerner," used for both The Age of Rhyme (published in Charleston SC in 1830) and a prose narrative, Osceola, or, Fact and Fiction, a Tale of the Seminole Wars (dated from New Orleans but published in New York City in 1838), was attached to Duke by William Cushing in Initials and Pseudonyms (1885)--on what basis is not known. Osceola is more commonly attributed to James Birchett Ransom. Nothing more has been discovered about Duke. HJ
