Biography:
DRUMMOND, William Hamilton (1778-1865: ODNB)
He was born in Larne, County Antrim, son of William and Rose (Hare) Drummond. His father was a naval officer and surgeon, but he died when Drummond was a boy. His mother moved the family to Belfast, where Drummond went to school at Belfast Academy. After a brief experience of commercial life, he entered Glasgow University in 1794 to study for the ministry, but was obliged to leave without a degree, probably for want of funds. He was ordained in Belfast in 1800, married Barbara Tomb, and opened a boarding school. In 1815 he accepted a call to preach in Dublin, where he became a member of the Royal Irish Academy and for many years served as its librarian. His second marriage was to Catherine Blackley; from his two marriages, six children survived him. Besides many poetical works, Drummond wrote extensively on intellectual and religious issues, notably in favour of Unitarianism and on the rights of animals.
