DOW, Alexander (1735/6-79: ODNB)

Born in Scotland, the son of a customs officer, Dow went to sea as a midshipman in 1757, joined the East India Company as a cadet in Bengal in 1760, and rose through the ranks of the Company to become eventually a lieutenant-colonel. He served as a soldier and administrator for the Company in India; on his periodic returns to Britain, he published translations from Persian, an influential History of Hindostan in three volumes (1768, 1772), and two verse tragedies. But his health deteriorated and he died at Bhagalpur, aged 43. (ODNB 22 Sept. 2018) HJ
