Biography:
DOUGLAS, Alexander (1771-1821: MSM)
A linen weaver, he was the son of Robert Douglas, a labourer in Strathmiglo. He attended school in the winters and tended cattle in the summers before his apprenticeship which took him to Pathhead, near Kirkcaldy. Douglas was noted for his piety and he studied literature and poetry in his spare time. He was encouraged to publish his verses by Dr Paterson of Auchtermuchty. Paterson helped in collecting subscriptions and the book was a financial success. Douglas was twice married, and his second wife survived him. (MSM)
