Biography:
DOUBLEDAY, Thomas (1790-1870: ODNB)
He was born on 9 Feb. 1790 (baptised 17 June) at Newcastle upon Tyne to George Doubleday, a soap and tallow maker in partnership as Doubleday and Easterby. George Doubleday was baptised as a Quaker in 1755 but he married a widow, Mary (Easterby) Fawcett at St. John's in Newcastle. Likely Thomas Doubleday was twice married but no record of his first marriage has been located. He had three sons when he married Mary Fisher on 10 Mar. 1827 at Monk-Wearmouth, Durham; they had three daughters. He was active in the Northern Political Union, fighting for parliamentary reform, and well-known for his political writings. With the decline of the family business in the 1840s, he served as the Registrar for St Andrew’s parish, Newcastle, and secretary for the mine owners’ association. Doubleday died at Gosforth, Northumberland, on 18 Dec. 1870. His wife died on 4 Mar. 1871; they are both buried in St. Nicholas's churchyard in Gosforth.
