DOSSEY, William (1778-1853: ancestry.com)

Born in North Carolina to Caleb and Nancy (Beach) Dorsey, he became a prominent Southern Baptist minister. He was said to be an effective revivalist and a gifted preacher. He married Mary Outlaw (d 1852); five children survived him. His collection of hymns, The Choice, published during his tenure as minister of the church in Society Hill SC, was widely used in the South; over 100 of the hymns and songs were his original compositions. Increasing deafness led to his retirement to Marengo AL, where he died. (Benson; ancestry.com 22 Sept. 2018) HJ
