Author: Donoghue, J.

Biography:

DONOGHUE, J. (fl 1797)

The preface to his book indicates that he was young when it was published and several of the poems establish his connection to Barnstaple, Devon. The book was printed by William Syles of Barnstaple but published in London. A Jeremiah Donoghue married Sarah Wiley (or Wailey) in Barnstaple on 13 Feb. 1774: were they the poet’s parents? Their son, Jeremiah, was baptised in Barnstaple on 13 July 1774; his surname is given as Doneghue in the baptismal record. Possibly he was the Jeremiah Donoughue who died in London and was buried on 4 Mar. 1832 at St. George’s, Hanover Square. He may have been connected to A. Donoughue (q.v.).  (O’Donoghue; ancestry.co.uk 29 July 2024; John Roberts Chanter, Sketches of the Literary History of Barnstaple [1866]) SR
