Biography:

DOIG, David (1718/19-1800: ODNB)

He was the son of a farmer in Angus. Despite not learning to read until he was twelve because of poor eyesight, he earned a bursary to St Andrew’s and graduated BA. He taught at various schools before being named Rector of the grammar school in Stirling. In recognition of his forty-year service in this role, the University of Glasgow conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Laws. He was a fellow of both the Royal and the Antiquarian societies, Edinburgh. His most significant work is Two Letters on the Savage State (1792), arguing against the perfectibility of human nature.  (ODNB 23 Oct 2018) SR
