Biography:

DIXON, George Read (1808-39: ancestry.co.uk)

He was born on 21 Aug. 1808 and baptised on 20 Jan. 1809 at St. Bartholomew by the Exchange, City of London, the second of six children of Kennett Dixon (1782-1814), attorney, and Jane Buckley Dennison (1786-1837), daughter of a surgeon, who had married in 1806. His father had a practice at Angel Court, Throgmorton Street, City of London. Nothing is known of his early education but he was articled to Thomas Dawes, solicitor in the High Court of Chancery, for five years on 19 Nov. 1823. He later practised at 79 Basinghall Street, City of London. With his elder brother Kennett Dixon (q.v.) he published an Annual imitation, The Poetical Souvenir, announced in the newspapers at the end of 1826 as “an elegant Christmas present,” as was traditional for annuals. He married Emily Cobbold, from the prominent local brewing family, on 3 Sept. 1833 at St. Clement’s, Ipswich, Suffolk. They had four sons, three of whom survived into adulthood. He died at Cliff Cottage, Ipswich, on 8 Oct. 1839 and was buried at Holy Trinity, Ipswich, where there is still a monumental tomb. His widow, Emily, married a distant cousin in 1849.
