DENNING, Elizabeth (1797-1820: ancestry.com)

The best information available about "Eliza," as her family knew her, comes from the posthumous volume of poems edited and with a preface by her father, dated Jan. 1821. She was the eldest daughter of William Denning Jr. (1768-1849) and his wife Catherine L. Smith (1770-1869), who had married on 3 Nov. 1794 in New York. Elizabeth grew up at Grassy Point NY and was educated at home, primarily by her mother, along with her sisters Caroline, Rosetta (d 1819), Jane Louise, and Elmina. She died at the family's New York City home, 351 Broadway, on 25 Apr. 1820 and was buried in St. Paul's churchyard. (ancestry.com 24 Aug. 2025; findagrave.com 16 Dec. 2025; New York Weekly Herald 8 Nov. 1794; New York Daily Advertiser 26 April. 1820; information from AA) HJ
