Biography:
DENNANT, John (c. 1767-1851: ancestry.com)
Dennant and his family were dissenters and public records are few. The names of his parents are not yet known. He was born at Framsden, Suffolk, in 1767. He began his education for the nonconformist ministry at colleges in Hoxton, London, in 1791 and then in Bicester, Oxfordshire. He married Sarah Green at Laxfield, Suffolk, on 18 Mar. 1794. He was called to the Independent chapel at Halesworth, Suffolk, in 1796 and stayed there as a “highly respected” minister (Norfolk News) until his retirement in 1840. The couple baptised five children at Halesworth: Hephzibah, Samuel Calvin, Sarah Green, Mary, and John. Dennant was an active supporter of Sunday Schools. He published sermons; pamphlets against theatre-going; and stories and poems for children, some of which are omitted from this bibliography because they are under ten pages long. His attacks on the stage produced a counter-attack by John Hugman, q.v. Dennant died at Halesworth on 20 Jan. 1851, predeceased by his wife Sarah in 1838.
