Biography:
DENN, Patrick (1756-1828: NLI)
The son of Lawrence Denn, a Catholic hedge-school teacher, he was born near Cappoquin, County Waterford. His mother’s name is not known. He is recorded as living at Affane, Waterford, in 1800 but moved to Cappoquin where he served as the parish clerk and a teacher. He wrote Catholic Children’s Religious Primer, first published in about 1825, and edited Timothy O’Sullivan’s Pious Miscellany which was reprinted many times and seems to have been first issued in about 1820. An Irish speaker, he wrote in both Irish and English. He never married. He died at Cappoquin and was interred in the church-yard there. (NLI; [P.
