Biography:
DELAMAYNE, Thomas Hallie (fl 1739-79)
An Irish writer, graduate of Trinity College Dublin in 1739, he became a barrister but then found his way to London where he wrote mainly topical, political poetry: The Oliviad (1762), on the recent war with France; The Banished Patriot (1768), in defence of Wilkes; and then his popular Senators series. According to O'Donoghue, he was a "dealer" in Soho but went bankrupt. In 1754 a notice of bankruptcy was published in London Gazette for a Thomas Delamaine, merchant and dealer residing at Abingdon Buildings, Westminster. He may be the Thomas Delamayne who was buried at St. George's, Hanover Square, London, on 6 May 1794. (O'Donoghue; ancestry.co.uk 21 Dec. 2024; London Gazette 5-9 Nov. 1754) SR
