Biography:

Deering, Nathaniel (1791-1881: WBIS)

Born in Portland ME to James and Almira (Ilsley) Deering, he attended Phillips, Exeter, graduated from Harvard in 1810, and was called to the bar in 1815. He practised law in Canaan ME and Milburn ME but returned to Portland in 1836 to pursue his literary interests. In 1824 he married Anna Margaret Holwell; they had nine children. He was a regular contributor, generally anonymous, to the newspapers, and became the editor of the Independent Statesman. Of several plays, the most successful were his comedy The Clairvoyant, which was performed in Boston and Portland, and his tragedy, Bozzaris, published in 1851. (Appleton; DAB)
