Biography:

DEANE, Samuel (1733-1814: ancestry.com)

Son of Samuel and Rachel (Dwight) Deane, he was born on 10 July 1733, when his father was a blacksmith and keeper of the inn at Dedham MA; Ebenezer Deane (q.v.) was his younger brother. He graduated from Harvard in 1760 and acted as the College librarian from 1760 to 1763. He was ordained in 1764 and called to the first parish in Portland ME, where he stayed for fifty years, first as assistant to the incumbent Thomas Smith and finally as Pastor himself. He married Eunice Pearson (d 1812) in 1776; they had no children. His interest in experimental farming led to the publication of The New England Farmer or Georgical Dictionary (1790), for which Brown University made him an honorary DD. He died at Portland on 12 Nov. 1814. (ANBO; DAB; ancestry.com 24 Aug. 2025) HJ
