DEALTRY, Robert (1755-1830: ancestry.co.uk)

He was baptised Skinner Robert Baylis Dealtry on 28 Oct. 1755, at St. Leonards, Eastcheap, City of London, the son of George Dealtry, druggist and Master of the Skinners’ Company, and Caroline Carey, who had married at Dulwich College in 1749. He was educated at Tonbridge school, Kent, and Trinity College Cambridge (Pensioner 1772, matric. 1774, Scholar 1775, BA 1777, MA 1780, incorp. Trinity College Dublin, MA, LLD 1783). After his ordination as priest in 1780 but before leaving England, he delivered and printed A Sermon Preached at York . . . for the Benefit of the Lunatic Asylum(1782). From 1782 to 1815 he gave an array of annual Charity Sermons in various locations in Ireland for the benefit of the poor, schools, asylums, lying-in hospitals and other institutions. He was rector of Dunganstown, co. Wicklow (1782-1830), prebendary of Tipperkevin, Dublin (1782-6), precentor of St. Patrick’s, Dublin (1786-9), prebendary of Clonmethan (1789-95), and prebendary of Wicklow 1795-1830. He married first a widow, Charlotte (Ord) Rey, on 25 Mar. 1780 at St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh. (Her brother Daniel Ord married Robert Dealtry’s elder sister, Mary.) A son, George Arthur Arden Dealtry (1790-1865), was born at Dunganstown in 1790. Charlotte Dealtry probably died in Ireland. He then married Selina Dering (1756-1836), eldest daughter of Sir Edward Dering, in the chapel at Lambeth House, London, on 16 Sept. 1796. Mary Tighe’s (q.v.) grandfather John Blachford was a former prebendary of Wicklow and the two families were on good terms. Dealtry composed the funeral epitaph at Mary Tighe’s funeral and also wrote a memorial poem, “In Memory of Mary, Authoress of Psyche.” He also published An Elegy on Sir John Moore (1809), which is rare and bound in a sammelband with the item listed here (Bodley, G. Pamph. 1698 [22]). He died on 6 Jan. 1830 at Newton Green, Ayr, Scotland.
