Biography:

De Peyster, Arent Schuyler (1736-1822: findagrave)

Born at New York NY he was the son of Pierre Guillaume De Peyster and Cornelia Schuyler. He was commissioned in time for the Seven Years War; served under his uncle, Colonel Peter Schuyler; was captured and imprisoned in France; and finished the war serving in the 8th Regiment of Foot in Germany. Stationed in Scotland after the war, he married Rebecca Blair. When his regiment was sent to Canada, he was promoted and, in 1774, became commander of Fort Michilimackinac. He served in the revolutionary war and held Detroit for the British. In 1783 he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and subsequently became a colonel. He retired in 1794, moving to Scotland, but his military career continued in a voluntary capacity: the list of his accomplishments on the title-page of his book states that in 1796 he was colonel to the Dumfries “gentlemen” volunteers.
