His parents were Frederick Kruger and his wife Harriet Dorothea Bennett (b 1774) who had married on 13 Sept. 1795. Frederick the son was baptised at Bodmin, Cornwall, on 18 June 1796; a brother, Jacob, was baptised at the same time but seems to have died soon after. Very little is known about his life and he is not to be confused with his contemporary Frederick Peter Nicholas de Kruger who was a lieutenant in the army. Although the author of The Pirate, and Other Poems was born Kruger, for his one publication he opted to use De Kruger. The title page identifies him as a mariner, meaning that he was in the merchant marine. He is recorded as being treated for gout at the Dreadnought Seamen's Hospital in Greenwich in Apr. 1843, and in the 1845 register of seamen he is identified as Frederick Kruger of Shoreditch. There is no evidence that he was married. He died in 1864 and was buried at St. George in the East, London. His book is dedicated to Sir Charles Vinicombe Penrose, a Cornish naval commander, and includes a subscription list. The preface states that Kruger endured "a long continued series of unfortunate naval vicissitudes, and three subsequent shipwrecks."
