DAY, Martha (1813-33: ancestry.com)

Her father, Jeremiah Day, was first Professor of Mathematics and Natural Science at Yale College and then its President for thirty years, 1817-47. Thomas Day (177-1855, q.v.) was her uncle. Martha was born in New Haven CT on 15 February. 1813, Day's eldest daughter by his second wife Olivia Jones. According to the obituary and memoirs included in her Literary Remains, she was gifted in mathematics and languages as well as in literature; her favourite contemporary poets were Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Dana.
