Day, Martha (1813-33: WBIS)
Her father, Jeremiah Day, was first Professor of Mathematics and Natural Science at Yale College and then its President for thirty years, 1817-47. Martha was his eldest daughter, by his second wife, Olivia (Jones) Day. According to the obituary and memoirs included in her Literary Remains, she was gifted in mathematics and languages as well as in literature; her favourite contemporary poets were Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Dana.
