Author: DAY, Elizabeth
Biography:
DAY, Elizabeth (c. 1735-1815: ancestry.co.uk)
The only certain information about this author is the date of her death, 7 Aug. 1815, and her burial on 13 Aug. in Wandsworth, Surrey. She was a Quaker but she may have been born and baptised into the Anglican church. Blain gives her birth surname as Nicholls but Spenserians gives it as Crossland. If her name was Nicholls, she may have been Elizabeth Nicholls, daughter of William and Anne Nicholls, who was baptised at St. Mary’s, Lambeth, Surrey, on 31 Dec. 1735. (An Elizabeth Nichols was baptised as a Quaker in Lambeth in 1727 but she died in 1728.) Her husband was Thomas Day of Surrey who died in 1807; it is not known when they married and if they had children. The author is believed to be the Eliza Day who wrote the two elegiac poems listed in this bibliography and published in 1789 by Thomas Scollick and others. Scollick ceased trading in 1791 and Day seems not to have published again until 1814, the year before her death at age 80. (ancestry.co.uk 2 July 2024; Blain; Spenserians; Friends’ Books) SR
