DAVIS, Abijah (1764-1817: ancestry.com)
The primary source for information about Davis is a circumstantial account written by a Judge Foster, published by Hood (below) in 1846; but Foster condemns Davis's translations as little more than plagiarisms of Watts. According to Foster, Davis was born in Deerfield NJ, one of the five sons of a farmer, Arthur Davis, who was a deacon in the Presbyterian Church there. At 21 he married and went to Philadelphia to study theology. He was licensed by the Philadelphia presbytery and served first in Cold Spring NJ and then in Millville NJ, where he remained until his death.
