Biography:
DAVIDSON, Robert (1750-1812: WBIS)
He was born in Elkton MD, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1771, and was ordained in 1774. He stayed in Philadelphia until 1784, teaching history at the University and acting as assistant to the minister of the First Presbyterian Church; then he moved to Carlisle PA, where he had his own church and taught at the new Dickinson College. He was made Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly in 1796 and served as President of Dickinson College from 1804 to 1809. He married three times: by his second wife, Margaret Montgomery, he had a son (also Robert Davidson) who, like his father, combined pastoral and academic roles. (DAB; Sprague; Appleton)
