Biography:

DARLING, Ralph (1728-98: findmypast.co.uk)

He was baptised on 17 Jan. 1727 (OS) at Holy Trinity, Hull, one of at least thirteen children of Benjamin Darling (1692-1743), merchant, and his wife Elizabeth Peacock (1695-1742), who had married in 1716. He practised as a surgeon and physician in Hull throughout his life but was also alderman and twice mayor. He married Elizabeth Chambers (1734-99) in Hull on 23 Jan. 1765 and they went on to have at least five children. He died on 16 Feb. 1798, in Hull, and was buried on 21 Feb. at Holy Trinity. The following month a proposal for publishing by subscription A Poetical Version of the Gospels was advertised but the volume did not appear until 1801.
