Author: Dallor, Frances

Biography:

DALLOR, Frances (c. 1809-90: ancestry.co.uk)

The author of The Duel is identified as Mrs. Frances Dallor in a manuscript note on the title page of the BL copy. The publisher was W. Harding of 3 Paternoster Row, London. It has not been possible to identify the author with certainty but very likely she was Frances Dallor whose birth surname is unknown but who was born in about 1809 in Walworth, Surrey. She married John Dallor (1809-91) in about 1830; no public record has been located. They had one child, Frances Elizabeth Dallor (1831-1917), who was blind and lived with her parents until their deaths. John Dallor had a variety of occupations and struggled with debt. The 1841 Census shows the family living at 8 Queen Street, Edgeware Road, in London; he is listed as a bookseller. Later the family moved to 7 Charlotte Street, Blackfriars Road, where Dallor was an auctioneer and appraiser. He also worked as a wine merchant but, no matter his line of work, success was intermittent and uncertain. Frances Dallor died in Oct. 1890 and was buried in Camberwell old cemetery where her husband was also buried after his death a year later. He left an estate of £12 to their daughter.
