Biography:
DABNEY, Richard (1787-1825: ANBO)
He was born on 15 Nov. 1787 in Louisa, Louisa County VA, to Samuel and Jane (Meriwether) Dabney. He attended a school that taught classical languages and picked up French and Italian as well; before he was twenty, he was teaching Greek and Latin at a Richmond academy. He was badly burned in a theatre fire in 1811 and became addicted to the opium that was prescribed for his pain. After publishing the first edition of his Poems in Richmond, he moved to Philadelphia where he worked for the publisher Mathew Carey (q.v.), who published the revised edition.
