Biography:

CURRIE, Helen (fl 1818)

In the absence of public records, there is a good deal of personal information provided incidentally in Currie's one volume of poems. She was born in Scotland, where she married but was then widowed and left to raise an only son by herself. She was a great admirer of Burns; some of the poems in her collection are songs like his. At some point between 1809 and 1815, she emigrated to Philadelphia, where she published her poems in 1818 to bring comfort to others and provide financial support for herself; but she indicates in the preface that she has not long to live.
