Biography:
CUMMING, Robert (fl 1791)
Little is known about this author. A note on the title pages of the BL copies of his books states that he was a stay-maker in Edinburgh. His Essay Delivered in the Pantheon won a competition on the question “whether have the exertions of Allan Ramsay or Robert Fergusson (qq.v.) done most honour to Scottish Poetry.” Cumming decides the question in favour of Ramsay. Second place in the competition went to Alexander Wilson (q.v.). Poems on Several Occasions is prefaced by a four-page subscription list and dedicated to the Marchioness of Tweeddale. SR
