Biography:

CULHAM, B. P. (fl 1805)

The Fig-Leaf is attributed to B. P. Culham by HL but on what basis is not known. The Preface indicates that the author was a non-conformist. A Benjamin Culham was born on 13 Mar. 1762 in Framlingham, Suffolk, to George and Honor Culham and baptised on 30 Mar. in the Presbyterian Old Meeting House. If this was the author, he was apprenticed to a surgeon in Woodbridge, Suffolk, on 24 May 1776. No other B. Culham has been located and no records have been found for B. P. Culham. No first edition of The Fig-Leaf has been located but likely it was published in about 1805. The Preface to the 3rd edition states that the author has written a companion poem, “The Age of Folly,” but it seems never to have been published. (ancestry.co.uk 3 Apr. 2024; HL) SR
