Biography:

CROSFIELD, Anne (1722-65: ancestry.co.uk)

Her poem, “A Description of the Castle-hllls [sic], Near Northallerton, a Poem,” was written in 1746 but not published until 1777 when it was printed with James Beattie’s 1767 poem, “The Hermit.” In Nov. of the same year it was printed in the Town and Country Magazine and in 1791 it was published with “A History of North-Allerton.” Nothing is known about the circumstances of these publications. Anne Crosfield was one of two children born to Thomas Crosfield (d 21 June 1761) of Northallerton, Yorkshire, and his wife Mary Raikes (d 18 Aug. 1733), and she was baptised in Northallerton on 19 June 1722. Her parents had married in St. Michael Le Belfry church, York, on 16 Oct. 1720; their other child, Robert, died as an infant. Crosfield dedicated her poem to “Miss Lambton” of Biddick, Yorkshire; this would have been either Margaret (b 1721) or Katherine Lambton (b 1722). Crosfield died on 22 Mar. 1765 and was buried at All Saints church in Northallerton where there is a memorial to her with her parents and infant brother.
