Biography:
CROCKER, Abraham (c. 1742-1821: ancestry.co.uk)
Confirmation is wanting but he was most likely the son of John Crocker and his wife Joan Gibbs and was born at Ilminster, Somerset, in 1742. If so, he married Elizabeth Britnell in Exeter St. David, Devon, on 22 Dec. 1767 and they had at least one son. Crocker identifies himself as a schoolmaster at Ilminster on the title page of his Practical Introduction to English Grammar and Rhetoric (1772) but he later worked as a land surveyor in Frome, Somerset. He died in Frome and was buried at Holy Trinity church on 28 Aug. 1821. Crocker had varied interests and he also published Catechism of the Church of England (1779), The Art of Making and Managing Cyder (1799), and The Elements of Land Surveying (1806). His preface to Henry Baker’s The Universe is dated from Frome and states that his additions to the text are such that “the late improvements in Astronomy and Philosophy appeared to justify.” (ancestry.co.uk 31 Oct. 2022) SR
