CRICHTON, Thomas (1761-1844: PP)
He was born on 7 Jan. 1761 (baptised 11 Jan.) at Paisley, the son of John Crichton and Sarah (Lammon or Lamont) Crichton. He taught in a school of his own until 1791 when he was appointed by the Paisley Managers of the Poor to be schoolmaster. He also served as Session-Clerk to the parish and Governor to the town’s hospital for the poor. He married Mary Crawford at Paisley on 8 Dec. 1792; they had 4 sons and 5 daughters. His The Library (1804) was inspired by the establishment of Paisley’s first library in 1802. His other publications include a biography of Alexander Wilson (1818), articles in the Scots Magazine and other periodicals, and biographical sketches of some Paisley clergymen.
