Biography:
CRAIG, John (b 1796: Chartist Circular)
He was born at Airdrie; his father was a merchant, and his mother died in 1800. He received little formal education and initially worked as a muslin-weaver. He became a zealous Baptist and kept schools at Airdrie and at Echo Bank (where his Poems was published). He began studying geology and lectured on this subject at Glasgow while also working as a surveyor. His wife’s name was Isabella (surname unknown). He was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society in 1847. (William Thomson, ed. Chartist Circular [1841] 434)
