Biography:
COZENS, Zechariah (1763-1828: ancestry.co.uk)
He was born on 23 July 1763 and baptised on 12 Aug. at St. Mary’s, Chilham, Kent, the youngest of many children of Edward Cozens, schoolmaster and clerk of the parish, and Mary Read, who had married in 1745. He was almost certainly educated locally and at Michaelmas 1787 he was appointed together with his mother to the management of the Charity School at Margate. After his mother’s death in 1795, he assumed full control. He married Jane Redo on 22 Sept. 1787 at Chilham. They had at least two sons. In addition to the work listed here, he contributed to the Gentleman’s Magazine, mainly on topographical topics, under the signature T. MOT F.S.M. (The Master of the Free School at Margate). His Tour through the Isle of Thanet, and some other parts of Kent (1793) recorded a vast number of monumental inscriptions from many of the churches and churchyards of the area. He also held a number of civic appointments in Margate, such as secretary of The Royal Sea-Bathing Infirmary. He died at Margate and was buried on 8 Aug. 1828 at St. John in the Thanet.
