Biography:

COWEN, Isaac (fl 1817)

The title character of The Sage is an Israelite and almost certainly Cowen’s surname was also spelled Cohen. It is possible that he was the Isaac Cohen, born in about 1793, who became the proprietor of Holland House Academy in London. If so, he died by suicide in the Plough Tavern, Blackwall, London, in 1843. Newspaper reports state that he had become disturbed after the death by suicide of a boy at the school. That Isaac Cohen left a widow and nine children. (ancestry.co.uk 18 Apr. 2024; Illustrated London News 25 Mar. 1843) SR
