Biography:
COUPER, George William (1800-75: ancestry.co.uk)
His name is given as George Cooper in baptismal and census records although it appears as G. W. Couper on his two publications, Original Poetry and The East Coast Tide Tables (1828). He was born on 27 Mar. 1800 in South Shields, Durham, the son of George Cooper, a tile maker from Ovingham in Northumberland, and his wife Mary Wright. He and two sisters, Mary (b 1794) and Ann (b 1797), were baptised in St. Hilda’s, South Shields, on 20 July 1800. Very little is known about his life. The 1851 Census shows him as unmarried and living alone in Reken Dyke Lane, Westoe, South Shields; his occupation is given as nautical teacher. It is possible that he had served in the navy but no records have been located. In 1851 he married Agnes Middlemost in South Shields; she is recorded as a house servant aged sixteen and living with her parents in the 1851 Census. They had one son, John George (1859-1945). Couper died on 3 Mar. 1875, leaving effects of under £100. Agnes remarried in 1880 and died in 1905. (ancestry.co.uk 5 Apr. 2024; findmypast.co.uk 5 Apr. 2024) SR
