Author: Cotter, James Laurence

Biography:

COTTER, James Lawrence (1782-1850: DIB)

He was the eldest son of George Sackville Cotter (q.v.) and his wife Margaret Rogers, and likely was born at Youghal, Co. Cork. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin (BA 1809, LLB and LLD 1820), and became the vicar of Buttevant, Co. Cork. He was twice married: to Matilda Lampy (or possibly Sampayo) in 1807 with whom he had two sons and, after her death, to Harriet Carleton in 1832 with whom he had two sons and a daughter. His Ellen and Francisco, a Brazilian Tale in Five Cantos was issued in 1850; the preface states that it was based on a tale told by a returning traveller. Nothing more is known about him although the title page of his Sacred and Instructive Poetry states that he was domestic chaplain to the Earl of Huntingdon.
