Biography:
COTTER, George Sackville (1755-1831: ODNB)
He was a younger son of James Cotter, MP in the Irish parliament and a baronet from 1763, and his wife Arabella Cassaubon, a widow whose former name was Rogerson. His place of birth is not known. He was educated at Westminster School where he was captain and at Trinity College, Cambridge (BA 1775, MA 1779). He was ordained a deacon in 1776 and a priest in 1778, both at Cork. He was curate of Cloyne, Co. Cork, in 1781; vicar of Kilmichael, Co. Cork, 1784-97; and rector and vicar of the Union of Ightermorrough, Co. Cork, 1797-1831. In 1775 he married Margaret Rogers; they had four sons and at least two daughters. His other publications include translations of plays by Terence (1824, with details of the Westminster school productions in which he had performed) and Plautus (1827); both were intended for use by schools. The afterword to the latter comments on the fatigue of the work of translating and transcribing the plays for the press “at the age of seventy-two, when gout and some infirmities oppress.” He died at his home in Devonshire Place, Youghal, on Easter Sunday (3 Apr.); his wife survived him for a year.
