Biography:
CORKINDALE, Duncan (1809-78: ancestry.co.uk)
His surname is given as McCorkindale or MacCorkindale in Scotland. He was the son of Duncan McCorkindale, a merchant and magistrate, and his wife Catherine MacIsaac. He was born on 2 Feb. 1809 in Campbelltown, Argyllshire, and baptised on 5 Feb. He had a good education and one of his school friends was John Cameron (q.v.). He trained as a merchant in Glasgow before moving to London where he contributed to magazines and wrote verse. Corkindale married Janet Liddell on 26 July 1829 in Barony, Lanarkshire; they had at least three children. His business in Glasgow prospered and he retired in 1857. Corkindale was a keen book collector and he published two other books of verse which were favourably reviewed: Poems of Early and Later Years (1863) and A Raid in the Highlands, and Lays of the Affections (1869).
