Author: COPLAND, John

Biography:

COPLAND, John (fl 1775-76)

The title page states that “Saint Andrews” was written in Autumn 1775; the book also includes a shorter poem, “Elegiac to the Memory of an Honest Man.” The author had connections to both St. Andrews and Edinburgh and it is likely that he was the John Copland who was born in St. Andrews on 28 July 1755 and baptised on 4 Aug. He was the son of Charles Copland (or Copeland), a Writer to the Signet (solicitor) in Edinburgh, and his wife Charlotta Corstorphin. They had married in Edinburgh on 24 Mar. 1751 but were to divorce in 1762. Nothing more is known and even this is conjecture. A copy of his book is in Walter Scott’s (q.v.) library at Abbotsford.
