COMSTOCK, William (1804-82: ancestry.com)

He was born on 24 Apr. 1804 to Nathan and Elizabeth (Emmet) Comstock, Quakers, in Nantucket MA. The family moved to New York City about 1809. His elder brother Samuel (1802-24) was a notorious mutineer who led a massacre of all the officers on the whaler Globe in 1824 and was shot by fellow crewmen in his turn: (William published a biography of him in 1840.) William became an author, journalist, and editor, first in Boston MA and then, from 1835 onward, in New York City. On 1 June 1833 he married Mary Morse Davenport (d 1896) at Boylston MA; they had two sons. Comstock's publications after 1840 include plays in favour of temperance.
